Serious question: How necessary is this software? Before Windows 10, I used Norton 360, and it suited me just fine. I never had an issue, not even once. (Long ago, before I had norton, I got a bad enough virus that I lost all my data, so since then Ive taken protection a bit more seriously). Then once Windows 10 came out I dropped Norton and began using their built in virus security exclusively, which I had heard was good enough to get the job done.

Now malwarebytes itself is not what i care for but the live screening feature is wonderful. If i were on a shady website about 78% of the overall ad pop-up's that get past the adblocker are cut short by an up-to-date ip filter. Sometime banned based on domain. I get blocked ips all the time but exclusively on sketchy areas. Known malware ip, some ads you name it. So, to answer your question: It's not, but it's nice to have.
